JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION COMMISSION
MISSION STATEMENT
The Juvenile Justice/Delinquency Prevention Commission of Alameda County is a state-mandated, court-appointed authority. The general purpose of the Commission is to inquire into the administration of the juvenile court law in this county in order to ensure that the rights or physical, mental or moral welfare of children are not violated or threatened by their present circumstances or environment. The Commission is dedicated to the promotion of an effective juvenile justice system operated in an environment of credibility, dignity, fairness, and respect for the youth, their families, and their communities.
The Commission’s responsibilities include:
- Annual inspections of juvenile facilities including any jail or lockup shelters within the County, and detention facilities and group homes used for the confinement and/or placement of any minor in Alameda County;
- Conducting public or closed hearings on matters relating to juvenile law in the County; and
- Advocating for youth and needed services for youth in the justice system

Commission Members
The Commission consists of 15 members, two of whom are between 14 and 21 years of age. They must be able to carry out the duties of a Commissioner in a satisfactory manner, including attendance at meetings, participation in inspections and investigations, and preparation of reports.
Commissioners are appointed for terms of four years (two years for youth members) by the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court with the concurrence of the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court and can be reappointed upon the expiration of their terms. New Commissioners can be appointed as vacancies occur.
